Afraid – The Neighbourhood (Explicit)

Warning – The song and the video are NSFW.

Hmm where to start?! The first time I heard this song I was having a rotten day and the “F*ck You Anyway” totally resonated. Now, many months later, I’m struck by how relatable this song is, and how often those feelings of frustration, fear and insecurity come up. This has become my favorite song to kick a hike off with, very cathartic.

Do I Wanna Know? – Arctic Monkeys

Is it unrequited love or obsessing over an old love? I don’t think it matters either way, this one is also totally relatable… “Ever thought of calling when you’ve had a few? Cuz, I always do.”

Right?!

…And the video is totally trippy!

Pompeii – Bastille

I picked this one up mere days before it being on the radio constantly. It’s still a great song despite the airplay and fits the theme here. Where do you begin? Do you clean up your mess or tackle the problem that caused it?

Don’t Swallow the Cap – The National

Hmm I’m not sure what this one is about; some sort of emotional crises, of course. In any case it fits pretty well here and I really dig his voice.

Cut it Out – Kitten

Again with the I really don’t get it thing BUT I dare you to listen to this one and not find yourself singing along.

Dreaming – Smallpools

I’m a big believer in balance in all things, playlists are no exception. This is just a purely catchy, happy, top of your lungs sing it out kind of song, nothing deep, I promise.

Dissolve Me – alt-J

My favorite of this playlist, it’s a must to crank up the volume, dance dervish-like and try to sing along with the snip-its that are understandable. This track is the standout from their first album, I’ll have to check out their sophomore release to see if it has anything comparable.

Make it to Me – Manchester Orchestra & Grouplove – Not official

When I listen to this what I hear is a whatever, you don’t want me, I didn’t really want you anyway kind of song. I’m not sure that’s what they were going for but I like it.

Handshake – Two Door Cinema Club

I would not recommend watching the video, this may be one that is better to give a listen or two first. Though, the video is brilliant, but it’s umm super distracting from the lyrics and the lyrics are really awesome.

And yes, the devil would want you back.

Diamonds – The Boxer Rebellion

Oh the dangers of not really seeing someone for who they are, holding them up to your expectation or vision of what they could or should be. Yes, we’re back in naval gazing territory.

Sacrilege – Yeah Yeah Yeahs

This one musically doesn’t really fit that well but it is kind of in the vein of the previous two songs about not really seeing someone for who they are. Bonus points for a super creepy video.

Inhaler – Foals

I LOVE FOALS! That is all.

Breathing Underwater – Metric

Interesting to think about that moment where you compare what you thought your life would be and where you are now. Not really anything more than that.

The Pit – Silversun Pickups – Live

Oooh the opening gives me chills! Such a great live band, though this live video isn’t their best. Anyway, I picked this song kinda in this theme of challenging the perceptions you have of your life and the lives of others. I love this analogy of cleaning out a wound with dirty fingers – like your wounds really aren’t that scary and don’t need such careful tending because no one really cares, they have wounds too.

Three Wishes

•July 15, 2014 • 2 Comments

A blonde, a redhead, and a brunette were all lost in the desert. They found a lamp and rubbed it. A genie popped out and granted them each one wish.

The redhead wished to be back home. Poof! She was back home.

The brunette wished to be at home with her family. Poof! She was back home with her family.

The blonde said, “Awwww, I wish my friends were here.”

Best of January!

Ok, my best of January…maybe not your best of January but dammit it’s my site…

20 of the Internet’s Most Awesome Snowmen

I’ve lived in Arizona for 15 years now, snowmen are scarce here. We once made hailmen but it’s not quite the same thing. This site made me a little nostalgic for the white fluffy stuff; #8 is definitely my favorite.

How many of your health supplements are actually snake oil?

Yikes! As a friend pointed out this is a multi-million dollar business so I shouldn’t be surprised. More than one supplement I take or have taken was below the line, something to consider before you spend your money.

Why you make bad decisions when you’re attracted to someone

Because love, duh! Well, not love exactly, hormones are more accurate and hormones have been making us do dumb things for centuries. Check the article out for the ins and outs of how your body is totally screwing with you.

A poster that explains all the different varieties of zombies

I really need someone to explain the poster to me in detail but that doesn’t erase the fact that it’s beyond cool. SO MANY ZOMBIES!

Happy Jar

I love a lot of webcomics but couldn’t really say that any get a look every single day until I found this one – it is that cool. He doesn’t post every day but I still check, just in case.

No One Knows if it’s Dating or Not

This one sparked a number of conversations the week it published. At first I didn’t think much about the complexities of hanging out vs dating vs relationship, mostly because as a woman I was under the impression we typically get to make those calls, I was wrong.

So here are my two cents – Hang out with someone until you’ve decided if you want to date them or not. Date someone until you decide you want to have a relationship with them or not.  Have a relationship when you decide that you’re ready for something long term/serious. Above all  DO NOT have sex until you’re ready and are comfy with openly discussing what type of situation you’re in and the expectations that come with it. You’re the boss of your heart and body – own it – and occasionally make horrible decisions, they’re good for you.

Up in the Old Asylum

Every once in a while I come across a site that is just so ridiculously creative and stunning that I’m giddy and speechless all at once. This is one of sites. Gorgeous photography of a totally derelict asylum, layered with the thoughts, experiences and stories of people who were actually there- touching and tragic all at once.

The Perils of Being a British Merchant – Spammage

•February 4, 2014 • Comments Off on The Perils of Being a British Merchant – Spammage

Urgent Help Please !

Dear Beloved.

Beloved?! That’s so sweet! And puts me right into a helping mood…carry on.

My name is Mrs.Catherine Beattie a British Merchant. I have been diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer, which was discovered very late, due to my laxity in caring for my health. This sickness has defiled all forms of medicine, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.  I have since lost my power of speech and can only manage to write now; as that has been the only way I am able to communicate.

Defiled all forms of medicine? As in tainted, ruined or spoiled? Exactly how are you taking these medicines and what kind of Doctor do you see…

I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone not even myself but my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to people and only focus on my business as that is the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all, as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world. I believe when the Almighty gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it.

You do realize that Brits are always the villains in American movies, right?! That you’re evil is really not at all surprising to me.

Now that I know my time is near, I have willed and given most of my properties and assets to my immediate and extended family members and as well as a few close friends. I want nature and the Almighty God in Heaven to be merciful to me and accept my soul and so, I have decided to give the remains of my wealth to charity organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I did on earth.

But you’ve given most of it to family and friends…. Mmmkay…

So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in the Caribbean Island, London and Ireland. Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself any more. I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts in Switzerland and donate the money in the account to the motherless/charity homes across Africa, Europe and America organizations, they refused and kept the money to themselves. I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what I have left for them.

And yet you still gave most of your fortune to your family?!?! Of course they are British so therefore likely to be evil…

The last of my money which only few of them know of is the (US$8.7M) cash deposit that I have with a financial firm. I will want you to help me collect this deposit and dispatched it to charity organizations and please earn only 20% of the money as your fee for the distribution. Please let me know if you are interested in helping me out.

Because the financial firm couldn’t do this? So in summary you have horribly incompetent Doctors, family and financial advisors and yet you’ve managed to make a large fortune in ‘business’?! Noooo, not at all suspicious…

May the Almighty God remain with you as you help.
Regards,
Mrs.Catherine Beattie.

The golden hour?!

•January 23, 2014 • Comments Off on The golden hour?!

I love 6:00am but not for the reasons you might expect.

To start I am not at all a morning person. I mean I get up in the morning, do human like things with my limbs and am capable of all sorts of guttural noises shortly after sunrise, or at least as much as the next person. I can even fake being alert, if you don’t look too closely or ask me to do math. But the reality is that somewhere around 9am is when my brain kicks into high gear.

For me 6:00am is prime relaxation time. The perfect time to open an eye, gaze at the clock and relish in the knowledge that you could (if you don’t wash your hair, grab a quick bite and skip making lunch) sleep for another full hour. Or what about if you just hit the snooze for a five minute roll over onto the cold pillow, pull the blankets over your head, and ponder what the day might bring. You could even stretch out and do a little morning meditation in your cocoon of warmth.

Getting OUT of bed at 6:00am is completely overrated.
