January 2015 Playlist – Grouplove, Broken Bells, Big Data

Ways to Go – Grouplove

I started off this one playlist thinking in terms of inspirational, motivating and reflecting new beginnings and ended up with this one as my starting point. No, it doesn’t really fit any of those three categories but it’s optimistic and I think that’s perfect for a January tune. This also wins for best video.

Left Hand Free – alt-J

“Hey, shady baby, I’m hot

Like the prodigal son”

This one was picked on pure bad assness, strut and swagger – something I think we could all use more of this coming year.

Holding On for Life – Broken Bells

Broken Bells is solidly on my top 10 list. I sort of see this song as an extension of their song October, but where that one was more cautionary perhaps this one is more a sympathetic look at the romantics out there?!

Fever – The Black Keys

I had a little informal poll on what the meaning is here; I took it as getting lost in the passion of something you love but was over ruled with this being another angry guy song. I’m going to stick with mine more because it fits better here. And if you haven’t seen these guys live – DO IT!

Dangerous (ft. Joywave) – Big Data NSFWish

I love it when you get a song that sounds like a typical love song, kinda sappy and cute, and then you watch the video and it’s a totally different perspective and boobs, and blood… #fuckingdangerous

Fall In Love – Phantogram

This may be the opposite of the previous song.  The video, while super slick, enhances the love song aspects while the lyrics have all the blood and gore. Totally love it!

Thunder Clatter – Wild Club

It’s at this point in the list that I realize I’ve picked quite a few love songs…and another bloody one. Hmmm I picked this one for pure pep, inspiration and optimism.

It’s About Time – Young the Giant

Soooo given the title, I think you could pretty accurately guess what attracted me to this song initially. It’s also freaking amazing; a great soaring anthem.

If So – Atlas Genius

I’m a big fan of these guys, they were on a playlist maybe a year ago or so and one of the few songs on that one that I don’t skip over. I suspect this one will be in the same category, it doesn’t really have any deep meaning or message for me, I just really like it.

Pumpin Blood – NONONO

This could be the epitome of the starting over song, great message and perfectly conveyed.

“It’s so magical, feeling, that no one’s got a hold
You’re a catalyst to your own happiness you know
This is your heart, it’s alive
It’s pumpin’ blood”

Shot At the Night – The Killers

This might be the oldest song on the playlist. I’m not really a fan of The Killers but this one keeps coming back to me, I guess because I see it as perfect taking chances song. It also gets extra credit for filming the video as a cute Cinderella story at my favorite Vegas casino – The Cosmopolitan.

Work Song – Hozier (Live)

I don’t even know where to start with this song. I mean – His voice!! The arrangement!! This is live!! Who doesn’t want your man to feel this way?! It’s a lovely romantic note to end on.
