August Playlist – Yeasayer and The Heavy

This month’s playlist was inspired by the two concerts I’m attending next month, Yeasayer & The Heavy. I started with the two songs I’m really hoping that I get to hear live and added in my wishlist for all the concerts I’d love to attend like now 🙂

Mondegreen – Yeasayer (Live)

Underneath a seriously banging song is quite a bit of sweetness. I love this band because not only are the inventive and creative musically but they often have a touching message underneath –

“Be my sunshine when the dark clouds rumble

And together we can try to avoid trouble”

Awwww….

What Makes A Good Man? – The Heavy

If there is anything I like more than a Southern man it’s a man with a touch of audacity or as my friend calls it “Being an @ss” with a wink . You know that guy who has no problem telling you that you’re missing out by not looking his way (and you know that he is so right). That sums up this song entirely – audacious. I love The Heavy…if only they were Southern…

Temporary – White Rabbits

I could listen to their album It’s Frightening over and over again. Why these guys aren’t huge I have no idea because they are incredible. This one is off of the latest album Milk Famous (their third) which does not disappoint at all. I’ll be clamoring for the stage the next time they are in town.

Angels – The xx

I’ve been told that these guys are difficult to get into and I totally don’t get it. Beautifully crafted songs with a slight industrial tone and introspective almost haunting lyrics and vocals, sublime really.

Fader – The Temper Trap

The Temper Trap is one of those bands that create music so wonderful that I just can’t help but sing along out loud wherever I hear them played. And I mean wherever…

Oh and the lead singer is too CUTE!

Myth – Beach House (Live)

Very ethereal stuff here, reminds me of driving around back roads with the windows down at night with Cocteau Twins blasting on the stereo. (Yes, I’m that old.)

Gold On The Ceiling – The Black Keys

This is such a badass song! That is all.

Bad Blood – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

I stumbled across this one and immediately felt like I just had to check out the lyrics. It’s such a typical love sucks song at first listen but if you give it another try or maybe two it’s so much more than that.

Can You Tell – Ra Ra Riot

There is a lot of awwwww here. And what normally I would dismiss as just another silly love song is totally amped by the addition of a cello and violin – just that added musical depth takes it to another level.

Some Nights – Fun.

I hate this video. I mean I hate it BUT this song totally rocks and gets me all kinds of bouncy around the house and in the car.

How’d You Like That – The Kooks

This group is quickly climbing my list of favorites; they made last month’s list and there is a good chance that baring some vicious mood swing they might make next month. They are that awesome.

The Night – School of Seven Bells

Buried under a serious amount of dancey beats it a great song of love lost and yearned for.

“Tell me, tell me

Since you went away

Does the space breathe?

Do you feel a change?”

Again with the awwwwww

You’re Not Pretty But You Got It Goin On – Band of Skulls (Live)

Ok so I grabbed this one because the title cracked me up but I do love the band, they’re witty, complicated and hard.

Demons – Sleigh Bells

I about jumped out of my seat when this one kicked in and I’m still shocked by how in your face it is in that oh my let me listen to it again way. Total departure from what I’m used to from this group, check out Rill Rill from last month and you’ll see what I mean.
